Customer Reviews

Too small, too thinI don't understand these other 5 star reviews. I have a large size head, and this beanie feels like it's smashing my brains in. It's also about as thin as dress socks. It's a perfect fit on my wife, who has a very small head. Was planning on wearing this on a colorado elk hunt, and there is no way this is going to work. Even if it wasn't sized for a child, it wouldn't be warm enough if the temp gets anywhere near freezing. 1Perfect hat. Finally. This may sound silly, but I can honestly say that this is the best hat I've ever bought. Let me explain: I grew up in Michigan, lived in Colorado, and have always been a backcountry type. In Colorado that meant backcountry skiing, which remains the most challenging physical thing I've attempted (sleeping at 12,500' in a snow cave at -19 F in January on the continental divide is enough for me... I don't need to climb taller mountains). In all my years, I searched for a thin, knit, 100% wool cap with a true 'cuff' (or whatever it's called when it's on your head). I could never find it until this cap. This cap is perfection in my eyes. Long enough to cover your ears in double thickness, or pull down completely in high winds. The perfect thickness (thin but not capilene thin) for layering or beating it uphill with a pack on. Completely adjustable and changeable. Lightweight. Simple. Authentic. My only request is for some sort of subtle stripe or design, but that's just vanity. Yeah, forget that request... it's better unadorned.FWIW, my head is size 7-3/8" and the hat fits perfectly. It stretches without effort (it's woven that way) so it will perfectly fit a good range larger and smaller. And speaking of the knit... this is incredibly good quality unbelievable for the price, actually. The yarn is more like a thread, and the weave is so tight it doesn't seem woven at all. There is no sense of itchiness in the least no protruding fibers... tight.Perfect hat. Finally.EDIT: One thing I might add is that this is a hat best for outdoor activities, with the emphasis on activity. Walking, working in the yard, hiking, camping, running, back-country skiing anything that gets your heart pumping. It's not so good on its own for sedentary things like watching a game, hunting, and yes even downhill skiing (which is mostly sedentary). In those situations it's best to consider it as a liner... a layer inside a ski helmet, under a hood, etc. Or switch to any number of thicker hats. It's the thin ones like this that are hard to find. I've got two and will be buying two more. 5Stretchy, warm, and a good dealBought this to replace a Smartwool hat that regrettably I lost and is no longer made. I'm very pleased with this Minus33 hat though. It is very thin but remarkably warm for its thickness, ideal for athletic activities. It is stretchy so I imagine it will fit heads of most sizes. The price is fair. I think the hat will last a long time...or until I lose this one as well. 5Good value and qualityI first purchased the graphite/dark gray hat, and after a week of use and 1 washing I went ahead and purchased the navy blue. The quality seems to be very good after a little over a week of constant use. I have a size 7 1/2 head, and the hat seems to be a little snug at first, but quickly relaxed... After wearing for a few days and 1 wash, the hat breaks in and fits very well (I notice the hat more when its gone, then when I have it on). The material is light and very comfortable in 30F calm weather (no wind).Tag removal:This was pretty simple with tweezers and a sharp xacto blade. A stitch remover would work well too - simply remove the lock/reverse stitching at each end of the tag. Now, being careful not to pull any of the hat threads through the tag, while gently removing the cut tag stitches with the tweezers (there's about a dozen stitches). The tag stitching is off white, but there are 2 hold stitches, one on each end, that match the material of the hat (seems like they used 2 operations to sew on the tag, and therefore 2 different thread colors). As you get all the tag stitches cut, a gentle stretch of the hat along the tag helps loosen the stitches, and helps identify the 2 stitches that match the fabric of the hat .Hand washingWashing did "soften" the hat a little, but I personally think it looks better after a wash. To wash I used a bucket in the laundry tub, with a small amount of laundry detergent (all). I added the detergent to warm water (80 degrees or so F), and gently compressed and uncompressed the material while submerged. I was careful not to stretch or wring the fabric. I repeated the process with fresh water to rinse. Prior to drying I wadded the hat up into my fist and squeezed any extra water from the hat with compression (not wringing or stretching)Drying was easy on the boot drier- mine has a riser for gloves and hats. So I then put the hat on the drier inside out, rotating it 90 degrees keeping the seam in contact with the riser. After 1 hour I turned it back inside right, and finished drying for about 30 minutes. The hat does have 2 layers joined at the very top, so try to keep the seams on the top aligned with both top and bottom layers or else it may dry with the top/bottom seams out of alignment. Washing the hat made it shrink ever so slightly (.5 - .75 inches), but broke back in immediately - the net result was a better fitting hat than when new.Hope this was helpful - stay warm... 5I wear a 7 3/4 hat and this fits great. Not too tightI wear a 7 3/4 hat and this fits great. Not too tight, not loose but very comfortable. This is also nice to wear indoors when it is cooler. The yarn is super soft and it looks great. 5NOT the traditional Minus33 beanie!!Either this was a scam/fake, or Minus33 has drastically changed their product. I've been ordering/using these beanie hats regularly for 4 years; previously, they were all generously sized and definitely merino wool -- very warm (though not windproof). This latest order (Nov 1, 2018), is a VAST disappointment.First, I don't believe it is Merino Wool; rather it is small and stretchy, like spandex or other synthetic-based stretchy materials. Second, I I have about a 7-5/8 head size, but this thing squeezes my head to the point of causing headaches. IT IS NOT WEARABLE FOR MORE THAN 10 MINUTES!Vastly disappointed...and if you notice in the reviews, there is a recent trend of similar reviews in Nov and Dec 2018.Is this a fake product?Has Minus 33 started substituting non-wool fabrics, but still claiming wool?I don't know the answers, but this is an inferior product. I will not be ordering again, unless Minus 33 gets some quality control into this product line. 1The best so far!I shave my head so beanies are a must during Michigan winters. Never heard of this brand, but am a big fan of wool, especially during hunting season. Arrived promptly and brand new. At first I was surprised by how thin the material was, but after wearing for a day, and then sitting in a tree stand for 5 hours at 45 degrees, I love it! Keeps head warm, becoming the only warm part on my body left! The wool is very soft and I haven't experienced any issues with itching. I'm completely satisfied with this purchase, and now looking at other products from this brand. 5100% MERINO WOOL DOESN'T MEAN 100% MERINO WOOL!Let me start off by saying I'm no stranger to wool. In fact, the pictures I've posted are a comparison of this beanie to some of the best Merino wool base layers you can buy, in a similar weight.Anyone who has had real wool garments, Merino or not, knows it's not a stretchy material and holds it's shape poorly which is why after you wash it you must reform it and lay flat to dry which is why manufacturers add stretchy fabric such as eslatine to help it keep it's shape when needed. This beanie is very stretchy and has an elastic feel to it but is advertised as 100% wool. In fact, you will see in my pictures that my Ullfrott Original 200 g/m , currently retailing for $124/each is thicker than this beanie which is advertised as a thicker material of 230 g/m (picture shows two layers (top) vs 4 layers (beanie)).First picture are both products side by side.Second picture is showing the weight of the Ullfrott OriginalThird is comparing thickness between the two. Like any other reversible beanie, it has an inner layer and outer layer for a total of four layers when laid flat.I believe this company is intentionally being deceitful when they say 100% Merino wool. My opinion is that this phrase means that the wool that is used is 100% Merino, and does not mean that the fabric consists solely of 100% Merino wool. There is a huge difference between the two.I think, based on my experience, that there are other materials in the final product other than wool and I do not think it's an insignificant amount. I tested this product by placing it on my head and standing outside for five minutes in 25F weather with a bit of wind. Not that cold for wool.My head was very cold at the end of that test and I put on my regular acrylic knit beanie and stood there for another five minutes. My head/ears warmed up despite the fact that the beanie had the advantage of me coming from a warm house. 1Too small and too thin. Not a good cap for cold and windy days. Advertised as imported, which is true as it's made in China.Cap is too small, in spite of "one size fits most" designation. I do wear large hat sizes, so that bears mentioning. More disappointing is how thin the cap is. I live on the northern Gulf of Mexico Coast and this year has had more than its fair share of cold and windy days, and this cap hasn't kept my head warm on those cold days. If you live in more northerly latitudes you can forget using this cap on cold and windy or very cold winter days as it just isn't built for it. One other note: In spite of being Merino wool, this cap is slightly itchy. While somewhat sensitive to fabrics itch-wise, I do have Merino wool socks and no problem with those itching, so this too was a disappointment for me.On the plus site, it is a nice looking cap.The cap is promoted as being imported. What is not said is China is where it is imported from. 2Just what i expectedNot my first merino wool product, so I had a pretty good idea what I was getting ahead of time. Double layer 250gsm means it's thinner than most hats, but more than thick enough for merino. The stitching is superb, and the tag is not sewn through, so the cuff can be completely unrolled. The Heather grey color is spot on, a nice dark shade. Of important note, "One size fits all" actually worked for me! I know how stretchy merino is, so I expected it would not be an issue. I have a 24" head, or a 7 3/4 hat size, and I can pull it over my eyes without unrolling the cuff. It keeps my head warm and dry in a broad temperature range, even in light rain. Wool has a way of using your body heat to drive moisture out of the fabric, so a warm head is a dry head unless you get a downpour. It's springtime in the Pacific northwest, I would normally never still be wearing a beanie this time of year, but I don't get too hot with it unless I am working hard. When my head starts to sweat, the hat folds up and goes in my pants pocket, and I don't even notice it.Once you go merino, you don't go back. I have boxers, and socks made of it as well, shirt will be next...Original review 4/15/17UPDATE: 11/8/18Still using this hat, been washed a few times, and air dried. No holes, all the stitching is still good, holding up great. 5
